With between 50-100 promo emails coming through each day, it can be hard to give due coverage to everything I’d like to feature. Here are some songs I’ve been sent which deserve more of your time and mine.

  1. A 19 year-old dude from Indiana named Joseph Denny who makes music under the name of Spirit Spine. He’s got many a blogger watching him already. He took his name from a ’70s documentary about people with severed spinal cords who still feel they can walk. His music is like an amalgamation of Dan Deacon, Panda Bear and Washed Out; playful samples and chambered arrangements that belie his Garageband production methods.

He’s got a single Crashers (Highs And Lows) out in two weeks on Makemine Records, a 7″ label who has previously released Gold Panda, The Books and Plastic Little . You can get it from Rough Trade. An album Jungle Bridges has been released Stateside and ‘Flashes’ from that is below.

fuck-buttons-tarot-sport Remember those times when you picked up a music magazine and read a playlist of what the writers were playing in the office that week? Here is my nod to that publication staple. No great fanfare, just ten of the best song around right now I’ve been playing lots of.

Fuck Buttons new’ album Tarot Sport is out now and it’s amazing. If Street Horrrsing was a lethargic rush of euphoria, Tarot Sport is a kick in the balls at a rave at 6am, Full of sounds that would be at home on Aphex Twin’s Druqs. It reminds me more of Holy Fuck in parts too. The 10 minute full version of ‘Surf Solar’ is something else.

Also this week: two of the chart-featuring artists will be playing here soon. Miike Snow is joining Marina and the Diamonds and Digitalism for that Heineken Green Spheres gig in Carlow (more info here) and Ou Est Le Swimming Pool will be joining Annie Mac and Benga on November 12th in The Academy (tickets here).

miikesnow I really do hope this song is massive. Then, the world will finally be ready to recognise Phil Collins as a supreme artist who influenced alt-culture and did more for music than merely sing and drum at the same time. A Collins renaissance could make it cool to dress like that bald dude from Lost. Also, it’s the recession and times are tough like the ’80s so we need some exuberant small men to show us how to have a good time.

The dude from Miike Snow knows this impending rebirth is coming and so has tailored his vocals in an ode to the great Philly. ‘Animal’ is somewhere between Vampire Weekend (who they remixed) and Phil Collins and it sounds good. Throw in a dash of Latin rhythm, a blog-friendly remix and you’re onto a winner.

Hey folks – Aoife here again. As I type, it’s late Sunday night/early Monday morning and Niall is running around the flat packing for SXSW. Bless him, he’s been RSVPing to parties all weekend. My heart bleeds for him, it really does.
