This is odd yet great. Marina And The Diamonds collaborated with piano-whizz/ producer Gonzalez on a new full orchestral version of the song ‘Hollywood’ for an Estonian TV show. Marina’s latest newsletter also lets it slip that she is down to play Tripod on May 27th in Dublin and the Speakeasy, Belfast the night before.

The Hollywood single is out today. Here’s an MP3 of the above performance.

MP3: Marina And The Diamonds – Hollywood (Gonzalez version)

One of the bands recently featured on my top 20 bands to watch for 2010 feature, Monarchy remix fellow Neon Gold artist (now alumnus) Marina and the Diamonds. I’ve had one listen to The Family Jewels so far and as expected, it’s a great pop album. I’m not sure how it will go over in mainstream pop circles but time will tell on that one. Need more listens plz. You can listen to 30 second previews in the iTunes UK store.

With regards to the remixers on this occasion, Monarchy have since been revealed as the band formerly know as Miike. That’s the past. This is their future. “What does that mean?” I don’t know for it is Friday and my eyes are hanging out of my sockets. Here is a remix to distract you from this badly-written post.

MP3: Marina and the Diamonds- Hollywood (Monarchy Gliese Remix)

Marina does ‘Hollywood’ in a stripped down form.

Here’s the post with the original video. The single is out on the 1st of February.

HoW 2 MakE it iN ‘thE AmEriCA’…..: a) sing about cellphones & ringtones b) auto-tune c) collaborate with big names. Cannot. Wait.

That was Marina taking the piss on Twitter last week. As she unveils her new video, the girl is coincidentally actually in Hollywood where she recently boarded a Bart Simpson ride at Krustyland, drank a Squishee from the Kwiki-Mart and bought clothes in Melrose. The things Twitter can tell you.

‘Hollywood Infected Your Brain’ is being considered as her first big pop single and you may remember it from the Dublin gig earlier in the month. I love the Catherine Zeta line. The video is directed by Kinga Burza and the single on 1st February 2010.

gaggle Marina is back in Ireland this week for a show in The Academy tonight and a Green Spheres gig in Carlow with Digitalism and Miike Snow so I figured this cover of her song was particularly pertinent.

It’s from Gaggle who are a un-nerving 22-women strong alt-choir from London who sound like they’d be right at home on the soundtrack to doom. They draw their inspirations from slave songs, all-girl groups and punk yet are much more polychromatic than that. They’ve been called “nu rave Pre- Raphaelites” by Lauren Laverne and a “sci-fi riot choir” by Vice. I’ll call them a neon-clad bludgeoning coven of cosmic vocal sounds. Check them out.

‘Hidden Army’ is a bit foreboding.

As it’s a fairly beat-orientated mix, I will also suggest you do not miss the following at the weekend if you’re heading which did not feature here: Moderat (a project which will apparently not exist much longer), Brian Wilson, Jeffrey Lewis, The Rubberbandits, Roots Manuva, Bat for Lashes, Chris Cunningham, Jennifer Evans, Tunng, Villagers, Skream & Benga, Introducing (DJ Shadow live cover band), Flaming Lips, Duke Dumont, First Aid Kit , Beach House and Amadou & Mariam.

marina We’ve had Marina remixes, videos and an interview so what’s logically next? Inevitable disappointment. Unplugged acoustic time!

This is an alternative, stripped-down but still orchestral version of her recent single is a nice addition to the Diamond canon. Our spy at Field day told us her set at Field Day was rather good so I’m looking forward to seeing her live. She plays The Big Chill festival this weekend and Electric Picnic in September.

Glitter and diamond fetishists beware! Marina and the Diamonds new video for the lead track off The Crown Jewels EP has both aplenty. It was directed by Rankin.

marina_and_the_diamonds You know I’ve been smitten with Marina’s music over the last six months. From her Obsessions 7″ on Neon Gold to the tunes on her Myspace to her blog to the many remixes to her upcoming Crown Jewels EP. Here, Marina talks about her obsessions with regal things, leotards, Kate Bush and a whole lot more.

So you’re half Greek and half Welsh. How does each strand of you manifest itself in your music?
Greek music is beautiful and has the most incredible melodies. Greek people also have a real sense of tragedy and for whatever reason are a very dramatic/ passionate breed.. that characteristic has definitely manifested itself in the music. I’m a very up-and-down person. so perhaps that explains the sonic jumps/ differences between songs. I never stick to rules when songwriting. Just see what I feel like and whatever comes out, comes out.

What music did you listen to when you were growing up?
I listened to very little when I was growing up. The only music i remember making a connection with was No Doubt’s first record. Haha! And I remember standing by the fireplace and sining ‘Wonderwall’ and feeling very passionate/ dramatic. Haha!

What really inspired you to make music?
What inspired me was imagination and a great need to express something. I don’t think my life has been more/ less exciting than anyone elses but I have had a lot of different experiences and I felt that if I didn’t make music, I would definitely end up mentally ill. I still believe that.
