A new video for an old tune by Holy Fuck. Directed by Mirrorshade.

Speaking of Music Videos, tonight is the inaugural IMTV Video Music awards for outstanding work from Irish directors. You can see the nominations here. I’ll put up the winners tomorrow when they’re announced.

I can haz pedal?

Not exactly the chest-pummeling I was hoping for but a gentle ribbing none the less. When Holy Fuck were louder, they were better. An abundance of guitar pedals from delay to distortion, controllers with one singular comically large red button, four mixers, a ton of Casio keyboards, a vintage tape loop machine and a superbly tight rhythm section. I wanted more aggression, more dirt. In the end, I was sufficiently swathed in sound but not drowning in it. There was an an encore, a couple of songs I didn’t recognise – with a lot more of an ambient electronica vibe to them yet upbeat. One phrase sounded like U2. I feel a festival atmosphere may suit them better. Onwards Primavera!

This captured video of ‘Lovely Allen’ is particularly eh… lovely.

I love reading those pieces in magazines where artists are asked what’s on their stereo / iPod etc. I remember Buck 65 recommending John Fahey for example. So with that in mind, here’s a list of recommendations from artists I’ve interviewed lately. Hope you find something of interest. I’m digging Holy Fuck-recommended The Oscillations.

Cadence Weapon

Clipse/ Re-Up Gang – We Got It For Cheap Mixtape Vol. 3
Trim – Soul Food Vol. 2– (Grime rapper from London)

Foals – Edwin

“There’s a guy from Bristol called Peverelist who makes the most amazing rhythmically complex music that has a dancefloor edge but just blows my head off. There’s a new Charlottefield record out and another band called Dananananaykroyd. A weird name, a fucking weird name [Note: it took me a long long time to Google those fuckers]. It’s kind of like Fugazi and Minutemen.”

Holy Fuck

I interviewed Holy Fuck for State. It was with Graham Walsh from the band who was a top bloke. MP3 of their Radiohead remix there too.

Holy Fuck Interview

Brand new and a little bit tweaked from the album version, the video sees the band playing in the round surrounded by black and white visuals. Holy Fuck. April 10th. Whelans (Belfast the night before). Fuck yeh.

Check out the No Age remix @ Gorilla vs Bear.

Ooh and I was also shown this first thing in the morning… It’s the Rave Generator. Recreate the annoying classics!

Or Yet Another Paper Planes Remix

Pedro alerted me to this DFA remix of “Paper Planes” after my Holy Fuck remix post earlier this month. I’ve since dug up with full-length version of it which will feature on Paper Planes: Homeland Security Remixes which also includes remixes by Afrikan Boy & Rye Rye, Big Bun & Rich Boy, Scottie B and a DJ Eli remix of “Bamboo Banger”. The Holy Fuck remix doesn’t feature, neither does the recent Adrock Beasties remix though.

This is another superb reworking as you’d expect from Murphy and Goldsworthy.

Holy Fuck MIA

Full credit to Gorilla vs. Bear for this one. I stole it because it’s so good.

Holy Fuck remixes MIA. I love it cos it appropriates MIA into the Holy Fuck sound and thus, becomes like a new offering from the band. Really looking forward to the gig!

Holy Fuck

Listening to Holy Fuck can be confusing. It sounds like so much other music you’ve heard but something’s missing. That is because this Toronto band’s ethos is to make electronic-based music without the techniques that laptops could afford them such as looping, backing tracks, programming. They’ll employ all manner of lo-fi instruments to get the sound they want.

Despite their rubbish name and this seemingly limited ethos, they have made an exhilarating album in LP, which is the my standout album of the last month or so. Kicking it off with a recorded live track, you get the impression that Holy Fuck excel more live than on record but that doesn’t stop them coming up with some serious dance grooves.

October’s Podcast
tune “Lovely Allen” has been knocking around a while but deserves another mention, due to Final Fantasy’s strings on the track. At times they sound like no other band going, other times they sound like !!!,all free-form and funky. “Royal Gregory” stands out for me as being the closest the album comes to a dance track that could be dropped in a club. Absolutely essential.
