Yacht Yacht’s new album See Mystery Lights is a huge leap forward in my estimation from Jona Bechtolt’s previous Yacht album I Believe in You, Your Magic is Real. Now signed to DFA, the new album is steeped much more in the electro, disco and dance of that label. It has more in common with DFA’s other release this year The Juan MacLean’s The Future Will Come especially now that Claire L Evans has joined Jona full-time so you get that boy-girl back and forth thing.

In this interview Jona says the UFOs and lights in the sky that inspired the title also influence the chords used in the music in terms of patterns of chords making up a the shape of a triangle. Below are two live videos from Pitchfork.TV.

THITH Hellllllllllllllloooooooo Broooooooklyn!!!!

Yes, it’s yet another band from that NY borough to kick off our post-Bank Holiday week. ‘Dressed in Dresden’ has a similar chord progression to ‘Clash City Rockers’ but this is very much a more modern sound drawing from peers in their vicinity like LCD Soundsystem and Telepathe. With added disco-funk and a nod to the post-punk of the city’s past (and still future I guess).

Jason and Eleanore make up The Hundred In The Hands: Jason formerly of The Boggs and Eleanore appeared on TV on the Radio’s Dear Science – providing backing vocals on ‘Lovers Day’. This is their awesome debut single. ‘Dressed in Dresden’ is out now with a tasty ‘Undressed in Dresden’ remix by DFA affiliated Jacques Renault – Download both songs from their THITH ZINE.

I’d never listened to Planningtorock before until this morning. I followed a link to a strange video then I found a weird remix of Telepathe and both of them are ending up here.

In short, Planningtorock is one Berlin-based Janine Rostron – singer, songwriter, composer, producer and videographer. She strikes me as akin to a weird LED helmet-wearing Lady Gaga if Gaga only listened to black metal and The Knife (who as it turns out she is writing an opera with on the subject of Darwin). An album is forthcoming on DFA records and the “Black Thumber” video promo above is for a special preview performance at the Donau Festival.

It’s weird stuff but I like it. This remix of Telepathe is like a playful but malevolent robotic clown. You’re expecting it to turn dark but it just keeps on going along the light-hearted jaunty bouncy path.

The original is a total heady Saturday night tune very much in the vein of Human League while the James Curd remix gives has a bit more of a hop and skip electro vibe (whatever that means). Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem seems to have joined The Juan Maclean for this round too. This is the lead track from forthcoming album The Future Will Come on DFA. I’ve been told to look out for the Emperor Machine remix of the same tune.

The Dewaele Brothers took over Rob Da Bank’s show for two hours on Monday and being known for their eclectic mixes and deep knowledge of music of the last 35 years, they decided to take a different take on things. For the first hour, it was a non-stop intros round where they played the intros of 420 songs in a row. It sounds like they’re taking the piss but it’s a curious listen much like that hidden UNKLE track on Psyence Fiction (but that only had 58 songs so up yours Lavelle). The hour takes in all manner of popular music including Sebastien Tellier, Devo, Japan, Neil Young, Randy Crawford, Jape, Wings, Pivot, Donna Summer and roughly four hundred others.

The second hour sees them focus on disco tunes with the likes of Giorgio Moroder, In Flagranti, Tiga, Love Unlimited Orchestra and loads of others I’m not going to pretend I know. It’s a quality mix of course.

Also Soulwax-related, I highly recommend the tour documentary Part of the Weekend Never Dies which goes something like this:

Or Yet Another Paper Planes Remix

Pedro alerted me to this DFA remix of “Paper Planes” after my Holy Fuck remix post earlier this month. I’ve since dug up with full-length version of it which will feature on Paper Planes: Homeland Security Remixes which also includes remixes by Afrikan Boy & Rye Rye, Big Bun & Rich Boy, Scottie B and a DJ Eli remix of “Bamboo Banger”. The Holy Fuck remix doesn’t feature, neither does the recent Adrock Beasties remix though.

This is another superb reworking as you’d expect from Murphy and Goldsworthy.
