Irish songs

Bringing the public polls to a close for another year we have a podcast consisting of the top Irish tunes of 2008, as voted by the readers of Nialler9. We decided not to announce a tracklisting for this one so that you’ll have to listen to it to see who charted where. There are some surprises in there but I will say that songs from the likes of Hunter Gatherer, Lisa Hannigan and Jape all appeared. As for the other ten you’ll just have to listen to Aoife count them down in our 54 minutes special. Go go. Shoo Shoo!

Albums of 2008

Before I announce the result of the Irish vote this week, let’s have a look at the greater picture. It’s another list! Here are my top 30 albums of 2008.

  • 30. Minotaur Shock – Amateur Dramatics
  • 29. Pivot – O Soundtrack My Heart
  • 28. Fuck Buttons – Street Horrsing
  • 27. She and Him – Volume One
  • 26. White Denim – Workout Holiday
  • 25. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual
  • 24. Jamie Lidell – Jim
  • 23. Fight Like Apes – And the Mystery of the Gold Medallion
  • 22. R.S.A.G - Organic Sampler
  • 21. Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke
  • 20. Clark – Turning Dragon

    Clark

2008 was the year Chris Clark let rip with some real bone-crunching, distorted glitchy rave-ups. Turning Dragon was like some grimey journey through the seedist club known to man.

    Key track: New Year Storm

  • 19. The Vinny Club – Rocky IV Reckyrd

    The Vinny Club

Vinny’s solo project away from the furious bass duties for Adebisi Shank was a 26 minute triumph of computer-generated fun. The film of the title informs each 8-bit workout with song titles, samples and theme. It’s the sound of an Atari throwing shapes on a dancefloor.

Key track: It’s Not You It’s OF

  • 18. The Jimmy Cake – Spectre & Crown

    Jimmy Cake

The Jimmys’ third and best album, a welcome return after five years of silence. Spectre & Crown ebbs and flows wonderfully through Herculean orchestral passages of melody and cadence, leaving an indelible chronicle of nine musicians contributing to a singular and necessary vision. The production is immaculately precise yet organic, the music epic yet controlled; brimming with piano, accordion, clarinet, trumpet, bass and saxophone.

    Key track: Jetta’s Palace

  • 17. Cadence Weapon – Afterparty Babies

    Cadence Weapon

Rollie Pemberton’s second album took us on a journey of his hometown Edmonton, on the way he recounted tales of his friends, failed club nights, hairdressers, tattoo artists and underage youth cliques all set to bouncing dancefloor-orientated hip-hop beats.

Key track: In Search of the Youth Crew

  • 16. Little Joy – Little Joy

    Little Joy

Fabrizio Moretti, the drummer from the Strokes hooks up with some friends in LA to make an album of sunshine-infused folk-pop and manages to surpass all other Strokes-related material since Is This It?. Little Joy is the perfect name for these little nuggets.
    Key track: No-one’s Better Sake

Go forth to discover and listen to Nialler9’s 50 best tunes of the year..

Comps
Counting down the top 20 compilations and mixes that rocked my world this year.

  • 20. Simian Mobile Disco – Fabric Mix
Number 41 in the Fabric mix series from SMD was predictably dancefloor-orientated with tunes from Metro Area, Hercules and Love Affair, Shit Robot and DeadMau5 culminating in a classic Green Velvet track and eh, The Walker Brothers.
  • 19. Amplive – RainyDayz remixes
Amplive’s superb 8-track remix compilation of Radiohead’s In Rainbows almost didn’t see the light of day. I’m pretty happy it did though. It features Zion-I and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. Download it here.

    Amplive – Weird Fishes

  • 18. Arabian Prince – Innovative Life
Stones Throw released the anthology of 80s electro-funk rapper Arabian Prince. Like Egyptian Lover except for this guy used to be in NWA.

    Arabian Prince – Innovative Life

  • 17. Jeff Martin – Spoons
The Halfset guitarist released a lovely remix album of his solo work earlier this year featuring reworkings from Minotaur Shock, Decal, The High Llamas, John Parrish, John McEntire and more.

Jeff Martin – Balancing Act (Decal Remix)

  • 16. Buraka Som Sistema – Mixtape
Portugal’s BSS released this 20 minute mix to promote their debut album Black Diamond. It’s full of banging ghettotech tunes and never lets up.
