Adrian Crowley wins the Choice Music Prize 2009 Congratulations to Adrian Crowley for winning the Choice Music Prize 2009 for his album Season of The Sparks earlier last night. A surprised, shocked and humble winner he was. A video of Jim announcing him as the winner is below.

Afterwards, the And So I Watch You From Afar juggernaut which shows no sign of stopping played a not-so-secret show in the Mercantile on Dame Street after their performance in Vicar Street, which was by-far and away the best short set of the night.

Here’s a pic of Tony ASIWYFA on the stacks in Vicar Street: More..»

The results of the poll are ready to be revealed. First up, the Irish songs of the year as voted by readers and commenters of this blog. A staggering 215 different songs were voted for overall from about 150 voters in total and the resulting top 30 sees multiple appearances from some of the following: David Kitt, Villagers, And So I Watch You From Afar, Hunter-Gatherer, Patrick Kelleher and Super Extra Bonus Party. I’ll post the Google Doc showing the number of votes for each song tomorrow along with the album results as well as hopefully contacting the winners of the prizes. Here is how it stacked up from the number one position which was a clear winner by six votes: More..»

Taken at the almost-secret gig the band played last night in Dublin’s Thomas House after Friday’s Ulster Hall performance. Apologies for the sound distortion. All I want for Christmas is a Flip HD.
.

asiwyfabasement One of my bands of the year, And So I Watch You From Afar are headlining the Ulster Hall in Belfast tonight but what you may not know yet is that they are also playing a secret show in the basement of Thomas House in Dublin this Sunday.

It kicks off at 7pm with The Parks also playing but capacity is limited and it’s guestlist-first and then first come first served. I’m offering two names on the guestlist +1 for the gig. Mail me on freebies@nialler9.com with your name and number and I’ll notify the winners on Sunday via text.

IRISH09 It’s been another great year for Irish music in my estimation. Releases from ASIWYFA, David Kitt, BATS, Julie Feeney, Prince Kong, Valerie Francis, SEBP, Twinkranes, Patrick Kelleher, The Holy Roman Army, Channel One, Mail Order Messiahs, Hunter-Gatherer, Legion Of Two and Adrian Crowley have all been keeping my stereo warm. What about you though?

For the 4th year in a row, the Nialler9 Irish album poll is back. As with last year I’m also asking for your favourite songs. Get some inspiration. There will be prizes this year, chosen at random for people who enter their choices which include a) Two packs of Irish albums released this year thanks to Lakota, b) a signed Marina and the Diamonds Mowgli’s Road 7″ and c) An Osaka records swag pack.

Here’s how the poll works:

  1. You can pick up to 10 Irish albums and songs released in 2009.
  2. At least three Irish albums and songs are required in your vote to count to stop people from asking their mates to vote for them.
  3. Poll closes on Wednesday 16th of December at noon.
  4. 3 ways to vote
    1. Leave your votes in the comments in public for all to see.
    2. Use the Google form here.
    3. Send an email to vote@nialler9.com with your choices.

So what’s it gonna be?

2006: Album: Si Schroeder – Coping Mechanisms
2007: Album: Super Extra Bonus Party – Super Extra Bonus Party LP
2008: Album: Jape – Ritual / Songs
2009: ????

Last night, Ireland got its first, long overdue spotlight on music video directors of this country at the IMTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural event saw Eoghan Kidney win three awards including Best video for Valerie Francis’ Punches, Best Director and Best Original Concept. It was a great night, a celebration of the creativity of largely under-resourced folk and a timely reminder that Irish music videos are as vital as ever, which is something we are finally seeing again with Under the Ether and Una Mullally’s forthcoming TG4 series in 2010.

Most importantly, I hope awards like this continue to inspire directors and their production teams to the point where we see even better videos win next year. There are some bloody great ones here all the same. Congrats to IMTV for putting on a great event. FYI: I was one of the judges for the awards.

Here are the winners:

How much ASIWYFA is too much? Don’t ask me, I can’t get enough of these guys. Here they are live in The Waterfront Studio last month playing ‘Set Guitars to Kill’ as shot by Bandwidth Films.

Two more after the transdimensional info drift.

asiwyfa Holla folks. This is Aoife Mc here.  Below you’ll find a 40 minute podcast for your downloading pleasure.  It’s along the theme of my last Irish based Nialler9 podcast, only this time we’re focusing on one band.  The almighty And So I Watch You From Afar.  The Derry born Belfast based band blew the heads off of myself and Niall when we saw them play a State.ie gig out in The Purty Loft in Dun Laoghaire a month back.  They inspired me so much that I thought I’d dedicate this latest Irish podcast fully to them.  I really hope you like them as much as myself and Niall do.  They’re so playing at our wedding. LOL.

We’re off on our holidays in about three weeks and I’d like to get another Irish only podcast up on the site before we head off, as the last couple of months have been rife with great talent releasing stuff on our wee island.  In the meantime though, here’s an insight in to the world of ASIWYFA.  Word.

Tracks heard on this podcast are all from the self-titled debut album of ASIWFA and they play as follows:

  1. Set Guitars to Kill
  2. Clench Fists, Grit Teeth… Go!
  3. A Little Bit of Solidarity Goes a Long Way
  4. If It Ain’t Broke…Break It!
  5. Don’t Waste Time Doing Things You Hate

You can buy the album here.

Mind now, it’s a bit loud.  Enjoy!

Despite being on the radar since January or so, ‘Crystalised’ is the debut single from excellent Londoners The XX (no relation to the XX Teens). I listened to all the tunes on their myspace twice after a hectic week taking in 7 gigs in 5 days – Camera Obscura, Jeff Lewis, MSTRFRFT, Daedelus, IMRO Showcase, R.S.A.G and ASIWYFA so The XX was the perfect chill-back soundtrack to counter the madness. I wish they didn’t look so sad in the video though.

villagers_purtyGreat night on Friday at State’s first North/South gig series in the Purty Loft, Monkstown. You already know how good Villagers are live (go see him on his tour next week if not) and his solo show is equally as captivating.

Band of the night for me though were And So I Watch You from Afar. After raving about their album on Friday, I can confirm these guys are every bit as good live, if not better. They play Upstairs in Whelan’s next Sunday, the 3rd of May, I urge you to go.

The next State night in The Purty Loft takes place this Friday, 1st May with Escape Act, The Rags and John Shelly and the Creatures. Click into the full post to see the videos.
