Strange remix from Galway-based bootleg artist Phil Retrospector (“the undisputed master of melancholy on the audio-visual Bootleg/mashup scene” ) for Billie Ray Martin’s Crackdown Project where Cabaret Voltaire songs get reworked by various producers.

Phil Retrospector has loads of mashups and mixes on his site – Bootlegs Made 4 Walking. Check out his XOXOdus mashup which subtly puts Bob Marley’s ‘Exodus’, Ulrich Schnauss’ ‘Nothing Happens In June’ and ‘Pixies’ ‘Silver’ into each other. It’s taken from Culture Bully’s 2009 Mashed mixtape.

Stockholm, Sweden is home for North American dreamy guitar siblings Sarah Parthemore and Jacob Donald Snavely aka Dag för Dag who will release their debut album Boo next month. They have already released a 6-track EP entitled Shooting from the Shadows on Saddle Creek last year.

Half the album was produced by Richard Swift with the other half by Johannes Berglund.

Check out two tracks from Boo and a couple of videos below.

If you needed further proof after the fantastic comeback single of ‘Ambling Alp’ (it’s the nickname of a boxer FYI) that Yeasayer have shedded the neo-folk mysticisms and embraced their fun pop-orientated side , then ‘O.N.E’ is what you’re looking for.

‘O.N.E’ reminds me of the Phones Wolf at the Door remix of Futureheads ‘Hounds of Love’ in that both songs have those delayed synth squelches rising atop the rest of the instrumentation. Both songs are awesome too. Listen to the song here and then head to the site to download it.

Odd Blood is out on February 5th here and I highly recommend it. Pitchfork have a short documentary with the band filmed while they were recording the album in Woodstock. More..»

Just had my first listen to Gil Scott Heron’s new album I’m New Here. It’s been 16 (or 13?) years since he released an album and 40 years since his debut Small Talk at 125th and Lenox and the era-defining ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’.

The album was made with XL Recordings boss Richard Russell. As you’d expect it’s a mix of spoken word, futuristic blues, dark-stained socio-political life poetic ruminations. What you might not expect is that the man above still sounds as inspired and god-damn urgent as ever.

I’m New Here is out on February 5th in Ireland (UK & Europe -8th / US – 9th) in the everywhere else. You can get a free MP3 from gilscottheron.net. More..»

A band that a lot of people are looking forward to hearing more of are The Middle East from Australia. Back in September I featured the brittle and beautiful sound of ‘Blood’. Now, also from last year’s The Recordings Of The Middle East albums comes this opening track.

‘The Darkest Side’ is five minutes of Sufjan-esque heart-rendering folk made all the more special by the flighty female vocalist. They are going to blow up in a big way at SXSW for sure.

And a reminder of how good ‘Blood’ is: More..»

Prepare yourself.. this is 20 seconds of mental.

So that’s what the inside of their brains look like.ODDSAC is by Danny Perez. The nutter.

Now that There Is Love In You is most likely seeping into your ear canal, you’ll probably be experiencing a lot of love for the record.

If you’re still looking for more, Mr. Hebden graced the airwaves of BBC Radio 1 with an outstanding two hour Essential Mix over the weekend to promote the release. It starts with my favourite track at the moment, ‘Angel Echoes’ and goes on to include tracks from Floating Points, Joy Orbison, Moodymann and is pretty much a must-hear from start to finish. Tracklisting below.

You can grab it on Hotfile via Core.

Also, this Bullion FACT mix is rather excellent.

Drag City are streaming ‘81′, just one of the many, many Joanna songs heading our way in the next month. The triple album Have One On Me is released here on February 19th (UK/Europe – 22nd / US – 23rd). More details.

‘81′ on the right sidebar on the page. The site is taking a hammering at the moment so it may not load straight away. It reminds me of Ys material but reports and videos suggest it’ll be a mix of the sounds of both her albums.

Listen @ Drag City.
