Theophilius

I got a whiff of the Theophilus This Charming Mixtape and far from being a hip-hop cover set of Smiths songs, it’s an eclectic primer of what the Brooklyn kid does served atop tracks from Amadou & Miriam, Kraftwerk, Lauryn Hill, Bill Withers, Squarepusher, some quality electro and an ill-advised rework of Whitney Huston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ (puke).

Listen to three tracks from the mixtape and then go geddit. He’s playing Twisted Pepper on the 18th of April guys and gals!

Theophilus London -CPU Love

Theophilus London – Ultraviolent

Theophilus London -Crazy Cousins

The ‘We Fight We Love’ Q-Tip remix is another hot rework after the recent ‘Renaissance Rap’ remix.

Q-Tip – We Fight We Love remix (zShare)

Tip rocked the house at The Button Factory a few weeks ago. If you’re digging this or Q-Tip and Tribe in general, definitely get the Q-Tip approved free download mixtape J.Period Presents… The Best of Q-Tip, a mammoth 49-track retrospective done right with new rhymes and versions of loadsa Abstract-related classics. The mixtape also features the same woman’s voice from the Midnight Marauders intros. Limited time only so get it.

Check out ‘Excursions’ as retold by De La Soul and ‘Buggin’ Out’ redone by Consequence and Kid Cudi.

illanoize1

I know I shouldn’t be writing about this. You know I shouldn’t be writing about this. But I am. This song is a mashup taken from Illinoize by Montreal-based producer Tor which largely unsuccessfully hammers together Sujfan Stevens tracks with the likes of Aesop Rock, Big Daddy Kane, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), C.L. Smooth, Outkast, Brother Ali, and Grand Puba. I know, I know. Most of it is garbage but this song is worthy.

You probably know by now that Dry County have changed their name to Alias Empire and as is evident in the above press shot are sporting a new techno-punk look. What you might not know however is that the band have a free downloadable EP called AEMIX on their new site as a way of announcing their return. The EP has remixes by Nina Hynes, MJEX, Klass of 83 and this ten minute Philth/Seki remix I rather like.

Alias Empire – Another Idea (Philth and Seki remix)

There is a hint of what new material will sound like on their Myspace.

kaboogie_two

Dublin dubstep, ragga, jungle and electronica types !Kaboogie have made their most recent label sampler available for download from their website. There are eleven tracks in total from names like Cignol, 2-Bit, Bluefood, The Banker, A-Force, Prince Kong, Kachanski and Solen. Below are my favourites from the compilation. Get the whole thing though.

Cignol – Leiden Ex

Bluefood – Dek Rudder

Bluebottle Farm – Tom’s Swings

2-Bit – Stringaling

They’ve also been doing a mashup series which is updated every Friday. Here are two of the most recent I like.

PCP described this as possibly the best Irish made mash he’s ever heard. It’s a mash/edit/arrangement of M.I.A’s ‘Galang’ , Aphex Twin’s ‘Jynweythek Ylow’, Shackleton’s ‘Tin Foil Sky’, The Banker and Beethoven ‘Adagio Sostenuto’.

The Banker – Gashup

Straight turntable mash of Dr Dre’s ‘What’s the difference’ and DJ Vadim ft. Demolition Man ‘Boom Sumting’.

DJ Halfdutch – Demolition Dre

Kill Krinkle Club as shot by Feargal Ward for State.

Have you seen this yet? We put together a mixtape of artists like Prince Kong, Cap Pas Cap, Adebisi, The Ambience Affair, Grand Pocket Orchestra, Katie Kim, Kill Krinkle Club and more, all of whom featured in the latest digital issue.. 13 tracks in total. Go get it.

Jaydiohead

We’ve been here before.

1) Dangermouse’s Grey album featured Jay-Z mashed up with The Beatles.
2) Amplive’s sterling rap reworkings used In Rainbows as backing tracks.
3) Girl Talk, who mashed up everyone in popular music culture over the last 30 years in a mashup orgy.

There were a gazillion others in the interim and beyond and to be perfectly honest, this latest effort by Minty Fresh Beats is not very imaginative on paper. It’s too obvious. That’s why no-one has mashed up Jay-Z with Radiohead til now? It happens to be a lot better than it has any right to be.This is a gazillion times better than that Coldplay/Jay-Z collab by a country mile. Fuck you Chris Martin, this is how it’s done.

Jaydiohead – Dirt off Your Android

Jaydiohead – Wrong Prayer

There are a nice amount of subtle changes and arrangement additions here to make this really work.

You can download it all at http://jaydiohead.com/.

I had this on my headphones during work today and couldn’t help but do a headnod. Robotic dubstep mostly.

It’s a mix by The Others and MC Roguestar called ‘Keep Watch – Volume 3′.

In an effort to shine a light on the unknown artists and songs that pass through the mailbox of a music blogger, this semi-regular series will pick the artists most deserving of attention from nialler9 readers.

Au – ‘Are Animals’
You may have heard of Au, an experimental pop band from Portland. This song sounds a little like Animal Collective I’ll admit, but do AC have a 20-strong vocal chorus? No? Well Au do, I shit you not. This is from their album Verbs.

Oceansea – ‘The Whimsical River’
Really, really enjoying the From The Bedroom Floor EP from Portugal’s Daniel Catarino aka Oceansea. So can you as it’s a free download under a Creative Commons licence. Nice.

Tobacco – ‘Truck Sweat’
Tobacco is a member of Black Moth Super Rainbow and this is his first and largely instrumental, solo record. Made in rural Pennsylvania, the album, entitled F***ed Up Friends also features an appearance from Aesop Rock. It’s released on Anticon. [Myspace]

The Physics of Meaning – ‘Aeroplanes and Hurricanes’
The Physics of Meaning are a chamber rock band from North Carolina, led by multi-instrumentalist songwriter Daniel Hart. Daniel is a member of St. Vincent and John Vanderslice’s band, as well as a frequent contributor to The Polyphonic Spree. So there ya go. This song is lovely. Starts a little like Cathy Davey’s ‘Moving’. Might just be the drums though.

Woven – ‘Prickly Pear’
LA’s Woven were formerly on Interscope but have since embraced the independent lifestyle. They had no choice as they were dropped but still. I’m not surprised really, as this kind of laid-back, electronic-infused rock is not going to go down well at the behest of a major label.

Robert Church and The Holy Community – ‘Captain D’
Cute Swedish indie-pop from Robert Church and friends. Slightly reminiscent of The Cure musically.

Little Jinder – ‘Polyhedron’
More Swedish music. This time from the Trouble and Bass label in the form of Little Jinder (pictured). Rather than being a banging Drop the Lime style cut, this is an ambient pop tune. Listen to the EP.

Engine7 – ‘Me But Perfect’
From Glasgow comes Alan McNeil with a full length release for the Herb label of atmospheric beat-driven electronica. This track is an ambient wonderland. Buy at Boomkat. Sample some more.

Jah-C – ‘Soul Banger remix’ featuring Baje One, Scott Thorough, MC K-Swift, Stimulus, and Cavalier
Woah, a trippy late ’90’s hip-hop number with a bacchanalia of emcees including Baje One of Junk Science. Check out more from Jah-C or the original video.

Free Mixes:

British Males sent me a superb mix which features Jan Hammer’s ‘Crockett’s Theme’, Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time (808 mix)’ and tunes from Busta Rhymes, Dabrye, Rare Earth, LCD Soundsystem and TTC.
