tanlinesAlan from State has been telling me to check out Tanlines lately and I’m glad I finally did.
The tune that got me was ‘Real Life’ – an African/samba-influenced jam with heavy percussion and reverberating bass. They are on my list for SXSW for sure.

I bought their EP, Settings from eMusic. They’ve also got a couple of sweet remixes floating about one by Memory Tapes and another of them remixing Solid Gold. Both are below. Jim Carroll’s also on the Tanlines buzz.

neon indian A new song from Alan Paloma’s band Neon Indian, which was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear was released today. Paloma remixed the band’s ‘Cheerleader’ last year to great effect.

This new single is released through Green Label Sound and can download via the site or the widget below. Paloma wanted to do something through GLS as he’s now on phase two of Neon Indian after releasing Psychic Chasms so it afforded him the perfect opportunity to release a new single. I’m looking forward to their SXSW party.

nouveaunoiseyboys It’s a pleasure to tell you that Nouveaunoise will finally release their debut album Paraphrase Accolade in May this year. One of the last things I heard from them was their State mix nearly two years ago which is still superb.

The duo know how to produce deeply-arranged electronica with an emotional heart using crackled samples that eschews the cut and paste formula that comes with modern software methods. Rather like Four Tet, their songs feel like spliced moments of melodies intertwining around each other matched with nuanced beats and percussion. Very live-sounding.

Here are two tunes: One you may know from a while back ‘Cinnte’ and another ‘Goni’ which has some subtle backing vocals and warped acoustic guitar. Love it. Watch out for a tour closer to the album which will be supplemented by a live drummer.

Here’s their properly amazing Bonus Party remix:

You can also pick up these tunes on Bandcamp for free.

You might have heard this already from a radio rip but here’s the official stream of the Holy Ghost!’s cover of Friendly Fires’ ‘On Board’. The recently deceased Jeremy Fuchs also contributed to the track. The full details of the release sees Friendly Fires’ cover ‘Hold On’ in return and instrumentals of each track also. The 12″ and digital download will be released on split XL Recordings/DFA Records on the 8th of March. The bands agreed to cover each other after a drunken conversation one night at the Corsica’s Calvi Rocks festival last July so now you know.

Penguin Prison Neon Gold will release another double A-side single from Penguin Prison on March 22nd. ‘The Worse It Gets’ is the lead track and the B-side ‘Something I’m Not’ is this tasty bit of synth-led pop.

Look forward to the debut album later in the year andsome upcoming remixes of Goldfrapp and Jack Penate. For now, we have this:

WATW Thankfully, this We Are The World have NOTHING to do with this. ‘Clay Stones’ is the first single in IAMSOUND’s The LA Collection is a series of limited edition split 7-inch vinyl singles. This first release from dance music’s beekeeper lookalikes We Are The World is not a split but expect further releases in the series to include the likes of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Moonrats, Fool’s Gold, Local Natives, Dead Man’s Bones, Rainbow Arabia, Nosaj Thing, IO Echo, Pocahaunted, Signals (ex-Mae Shi), Actually and Imaad Wasif. Sounds awesome.

Pre-order. WATW’s debut album is out on Manimal Records on April 6th in North America and May 10th in Europe, though if you’re smart you can already get in on eMusic.

Stereogum debuted another track from the band called ‘Fight Song’ today.

DaedelusGood news for fans of men doing delightful things with light boxes and noise. Daedelus is releasing a new EP called Righteous Fists Of Harmony on flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder on the 22nd of March in the first of the label’s internationally distributed releases.

The 8-track EP will be less beat-heavy than his last album Love to Make Music To if the bossanova-chill of ‘Order Of The Golden Dawn’ featuring his wife Laura Darlington and the accompanying celestial fairytale promo video featuring another EP tune ‘Fin De Siecle’ is anything to go by.

The title comes from the name of Chinese secret society and resistant fighters in the time of The Boxer Rebellion in 1898 who believed they had magical powers. They were martial artists, practised calisthenics, believed they were bulletproof and able to fly. Oh, and that they could raise the dead. Daedelus plays Dublin on March 31st. Tracklisting after the jump.

We’ve had two singles from The Golden Filter since they appeared this time last year. ‘Solid Gold’ and ‘Thunderbird’ were knockout tunes that boded well for future material. Well that time is almost here. The debut album Voluspa is out on April 23rd through Brille and they’ve just debuted the newest single ‘Hide Me’ from it.

On first listen, Voluspa has plenty going for it – it’s a great mix of disco, electronics, ambience, synths and strings and ‘Hide Me’ might just be the poppiest thing they’ve done thus far.

If you needed further proof after the fantastic comeback single of ‘Ambling Alp’ (it’s the nickname of a boxer FYI) that Yeasayer have shedded the neo-folk mysticisms and embraced their fun pop-orientated side , then ‘O.N.E’ is what you’re looking for.

‘O.N.E’ reminds me of the Phones Wolf at the Door remix of Futureheads ‘Hounds of Love’ in that both songs have those delayed synth squelches rising atop the rest of the instrumentation. Both songs are awesome too. Listen to the song here and then head to the site to download it.

Odd Blood is out on February 5th here and I highly recommend it. Pitchfork have a short documentary with the band filmed while they were recording the album in Woodstock. More..»

I mentioned this song yesterday but it deserves a post on its own. The last five or six years of output from Groove Armada has passed me by but this new tune is only gorgeous. Former Roxy Music man, Bryan Ferry provides sultry vocals on this mournful tune and it’s the best thing he’s done since he was interviewed by Alan Partridge.

‘Shameless’ is from February’s forthcoming album Black Light. GA play their first show of the tour in Dublin on the 26 February.

I had seen the name around and heard snatches of music for the last few months but a whimsical eMusic purchase led me to download Toro Y Moi’s Causers of This and it was a great impulse decision. As it turns out I posted his cover of Michael Jackson before (posted below).

The project of South Carolina man Chaz Bundick, Toro Y Moi could easily be shoe-horned into the non-existent chillwave banner yet Bundick still manages to include a dizzying array of styles on his debut album. From glo-fi ambience to keyboard-led dance-pop to instrumental hip-hop/R&B-influenced jams, it’s a pretty exhilarating release and it has the feeling of being cloaked in a hazy barely-there memory.

It’s out now digitally of course but released properly on Car Park on February 23rd and there’s another full-length on the way too. He’ll be hitting SXSW in March too. A new video for ‘Blessa’ has just appeared which is below too.
