Stylus post Top albums, songs, films of the year
Oct 31 2007As Stylus Magazine are calling time on their publication today, they have prematurely posted their top albums, songs and films of the year. No point in writing about music if you can’t do a list right?
LCD Soundsystem are this years breadwinners with Sound of Silver and “All My Friends” topping the albums and songs charts respectively. MIA, Radiohead, Spoon, The Field, Kanye West, The National, Lil’ Wayne, Panda Bear and country star Miranda Lambert (Listen to “Gunpowder and Lead”. Scary - “His fist is big / But my gun is bigger / He’ll find out when I pull the trigger”) all fill out the top ten albums. There are a few choices in the late 30’s that will certainly be in my top 10 come December.
Song-wise, UGK’s “International Players Anthem” is the runner-up followed by Los Campesinos! - “You! Me! Dancing!”, Justice - “D.A.N.C.E”, M.I.A’s “Jimmy”, Radiohead - “House of Cards” and The National - “Fake Empire”. Full list here.
The Top Films of 2007 list is a bit of an eye-opener as the first two entries are Irish films; the excellent The Wind that Shakes the Barley and….. the film Irish people are trying to avoid like the famine because it stars gingerballs Hansard, Once. Is it time we put our prejudices aside and embrace Outspan in a lead romantic role? Has anyone actually seen it? Please let me know what you thought.
If we’re talking movies, for me This is England is the best film I’ve seen all year. I still maintain Death Proof is vacant and annoying however.

Was ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ not released last year though?
1Sad to see Stylus go. I did read a funny comment on a board the other day - “Oh, no. How am I going to know hwat to listen to now?’
I always liked the movie coverage in there too.
Btw, ‘..Barley’ was a 2007 release in the US.
Just on Hansard. I knew the guy a long time ago, before he was in a band. He was a guy that either had a guitar or albums under his arm and loved to discuss music. The guy had a hunger and passion for it I have rarely seen. Nice bloke too as it happens.
2Haven’t met him since, as I now live away, and his music is really not to my taste (Revelate was a decent track, I suppose) but I don’t get the vitriolic hatred that’s associated with him.
Like Damien Rice, I just say “Alright, but not really for me, good luck to him though.” Anyone that has seen how difficult it is to forge a career in the music business should accord him even grudging respect.
Typical Dublin douchebag begrudgery, everyone thinking they’re different while liking and hating what everyone else does.
