The week ahead, the weekend that was

Brilliant weekend. Did somebody say Oxegen? My first non-appearance at said festival since I started going to it resulted in a rather cool weekend for gigs in Dublin City. On Saturday night, I went down to the Lower Deck and saw Adebisi Shank, Bats and Selah tear up the stage. Adebisi were amazing as Gav predicted. And yes, he wore his luchadore mask. I caught the end of Bats which seemed promising and Selah was the We are Knives guitarist on a solo improv loopstation vibe and was very cool.

Last night, we headed along to the Boom Boom Room where Australian punk band Baseball shrieked their way through a set. It was not really my thing, a lot of shouting and a lack of a “groove” Drummond and Cauty might say but the violin was a nice addition to the heavy sound and it was entertaining. The support band were the great as always Terrordactyl while unfortunately I missed So Cow completely but I’m listening to his album These Truly are End Times now and it’s impressive.

To those for whom Oxegen simply won’t cut it and for those who want to keep the festival buzz, there is a plethora of festivals coming up over the next few months and next weekend sees State Of Mantua one of the most interesting smaller festivals happening on Friday 13th / Saturday 14th July in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. 7 areas (if you’re impressed by numerical stature) including main, electronic, reggae stages and Drum and Bass, A/V, film tents and art installations scattered around the site. I’ll be featuring some of the artists here this week but the big names include The Skatalites, 65 Days of Static, Digital Mystikz & Loefah, DJ C, Decal, Frog Pocket and loads loads more all for €65. Stay tuned.
