MRK1 @ !Kaboogie
Mar 30 2007
Rolling into town on the good ship dubstep and fresh from releasing one of the genre’s notable albums of 2007 so far, MRK1 (or Mark One as he was formally known) is playing !Kaboogie in Kennedys tonight.
Released on Planet Mu - who have had a few release of note lately (Milanese - Extend, Shitmat - Hang the DJ, Julian Fane - Our New Quarters for starters ) the album Copyright Laws has garnered some attention for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s a step up from his previous release One Way. Secondly, it’s a heady mix of dubstep fused with spacey reggae rhythms and industrial motifs. Thirdly, Mark One is probably better known for his production skills with grime crew Virus Syndicate who featured on Mary Anne Hobb’s genre defining Dubstep “Warrior Dubz” compilation so it may be fair to say people are taking note of the artists on the compilation.
Of the two tracks featured here “Sensi Skank” works the spacey ragga template to great effect while “I Got Two” is a paean to the ‘erb and is notable for vocals by prolific Jamaican reggae superstar Sizzla and the gutbusting beat.
Also playing tonight is fellow Manchester cohort DJ Messiah, T-Woc (Alphabet Set), Don Rosco (Bassbin) and Red Monk (!Kaboogie). It’s a tenner in. Get Dubsteppin!

1good enough fun i suppose. was it just me or did MRK1 get a bit peeved when t-woc went a bit over his time slot?
2I only arrived myself just as T-Woc was finishing up. I had a great time dancing to all the “DUBSTEP HITS”..
3good night - sound was a bit dodgy up the front, though.
Storm @ Rogue was good too, Vadim should be amazing this Sunday.
4Surprised I didn’t see ya there Una. I was stage left and the sound was rubbbiish.
5I was only there for about an hour.
Like ships in the night, Niall, ships in the night.
6But wasn’t Dj Messiah on after TWoc, so he wouldn’t have been cutting into his set directly anyway? I have to say I actually really enjoyed Red Monk’s set and DJ Messiah’s set had a nice bit of pace to it that I wasn’t expecting so he definitely stole the night for me. There was definitely something up with the sound, I think it was a cause of bass up and mid range way down. Earlier in the night a few of us were having pints up stairs before the doors were opening, they must have been testing the system downstairs - as the bass coming up through the floor was enough to make you dribble whatever about later on that night. It really was a night of “dubstep hits” as you put it Nialler, but to see the mentalism set off by “Check It” was well entertaining.
