Surgeon General

Allo, Mike here. In light of the outstanding remixes of Thom Yorke’s “The Clock” and Mogwai’s “Mogwai Fear Satan” recently posted by Niall, this week I bring you a short post and some tunes by Anthony Childs, aka Surgeon (pictured above in the aftermath of Glastonbury 2005). Incidentally, these mixes are but 2 of over a whopping 80 he has released, many of which on Warp. The first I heard of this guy was probably from a mate in school a few years ago, after which I bought a Midnight Club 12″, which didn’t disappoint. Luckily he played in Dublin pretty soon after that in the music centre; predictably enough I don’t remember much of the night, except that the tunes were top class. I haven’t heard of any appearances from him here since then, as I believe he usually plies his trade in England, the continent, Japan and the US. Traditionally a techno DJ, Surgeon nevertheless has increasingly mixed many other elements into his sets, from atmospheric ambient offerings to gritty electro cuts, half speed drum and bass tracks and I’ve even heard roots acapellas over some tracks! His sets have apparently deviated as well from the standard 2 decks and a mixer format towards incorporating more hardware and software, such as Ableton Live, in order to give a more eclectic and creative soundscape. Below is just a sampler of his own work, taken from the 12″ singles Counterbalance Collection, and a random mix of his thrown in for good measure. The good people at Electric City are having over to play at Wax, South William st, Dublin 2 on the 18th January, so you can catch him play there for 10 squids I think.
Surgeon - There are Many Imitators (2004)
Surgeon - Midnight Club 2 (track 2) (2001)
Surgeon - Diametric (track 3) (1999)
