Spank Rock
Jul 04 2006
It took me long enough to get into Spank Rock’s album “Yoyoyoyoyo” after hearing so much about them on other music blogs but I’ve finally succumbed. Spank Rock make dirty hip hop party music with plenty of Miami Bass, 808s and bleeps and blips. It’s the fast stuttering lyrical flow from MC Spank Rock that really stands out for me. At times, the lyrics are leaning towards the gangsta kind - on ‘Coke & Wet’ - the chorus is “Coke and wet, bitch/Guns, nigga, holla!”, other times the lyrics are rude and sex-obsessed but ultimately the party mood prevails.
The addition of female MC Amanda Blank on the old school ‘Bump’ obliterates any notion of polite female sass with some of the nastiest lyrics heard on a rap song since those dirty female rap luminary L’il Kim. Anybody who caught them at Garden Party last month will know what to expect. They are also playing Electric Picnic in September so here’s hoping they bring the full crew along.
Spankrock.net has some great stuff for download - a BBC Breezeblock set, Album samples, and videos. See links below. There’s also a couple of YouTube videos featuring Amanda Blank to check out. And finally, the Spank rock remix for Coldcut’s True Skool was posted at Disco not Disco last week.

Cheers for this, great MP3s again - I heard one of the tracks used on the Breezeblock mix on a mix by DJ C, you know the one with that sort of classic 80’s synth line? Like straight out of Moonlighting or something? He feeds it straight into the Rocky sample on an MIA tune - well recommend DJ C, he played Dublin last week and it was only fantastic stuff.
1DJ C, as in Mashit.com DJ C? fuck, I really need to find a decent events listing site
2Yeah, the very man himself, sure aaron spectre played the week before last and he’s another mashit.com DJ. It was put on by kaboogie, word is they might be bringing over panacea and knifehandchop - so keep an eye on myspace.com/kaboogiemusic for details…
3cool.
Yeah, I was considering going to the Aaron Spectre gig but I dunno, the man’s far too mental for me
have you heard that DJ set where he mixes in the Megadeth halfway through? insanity.
4Yup, its what he does live the whole time. He ended his last set with a fuck load of chopped up Slayer which pounded down all around like bricks from the falling walls of Jericho accompanied by the usual screams of BOMBO CLAAT. He also does this fantastic souped up version of a Bad Brains song which truly got the place moshing like mad. I dragged a load of mates along who’d never been to a breakcore gig before, including several punk sorts. All were converts, even people that hate hard edged music were giving it socks to the Drumcorps (Spectre’s grindcore/breaks handle) stuff at the end. Truly shocked they were with themselves too, they started dancing to chilled out raggan and then lo and behold they were moving like frustrated teenagers to Marilyn Manson by the end of it. He was fucking deadly, bet the shite out of Venetian Snares as a quality night and all.
5seen a spectre in ice bar. mental. soooooooo goooooood. missed venetian snares, was it shite or somethin:?
6Nah, it was grand - but nothing really special. It was very bloody sweaty though.
7Haha, This Song Is Funny. Totally Disturbing - But Funny. &&Catchy. Good Job.
Love,
Briar.

8[...] I have enthused about Spank rock before but a gentle reminder won’t hurt. GO SEE! The group’s debut album ‘YoYoYoYoYo’ is one of the best club hip hip albums I’ve ever heard and has been in constant rotation since I picked up a copy in early July. Anybody that was at Garden Party will know what to expect, dirty lyrics delivered with an awesome flow, electronic / funky / hip hop beats. In many way’s the album reminds me of M.I.A’s explosive ‘Arular’ as it’s club oriented and is almost a pop record. Take Sweet Talk as a case in point. It’s a funky club song until 3 minutes in when a wonderful breakdown led by the group’s affiliate female group Typical Girls drop a sun-kissed pop vocal into the mix. Spank rock will get the party started this Friday. [...]
