We think the same things at the same time
Jun 28 2006
Sinead has a review of the new Thom Yorke album ‘The Eraser’ up today, and I have to say her review pretty much echoes my sentiments exactly. I had high hopes for such an amazing artist especially after hearing ‘Harrowdown Hill’. That song is the most immediate on the album and has the strongest lyrics too. It’s about the former UK Ministry of Defence employee and weapons inspector David Kelly who committed suicide shortly after a Parliamentary investigation into the governmental dossier on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Lines such as “Up on Harrowdown Hill / Near where you used to go to school / This is where I, this is where I am lying down / Did I fall or was I pushed / Then wheres the blood?“, reinforce the sense of desperation surrounding David Kelly’s death.
The album is full of electronic beats which stutter and collapse, while there is some truly beautiful piano featured on some tracks and Thom’s voice is as good as ever. Highlights for me are - ‘Harrowdown Hill’, ‘Atoms for Peace’ , ‘The Clock’, ‘Analyse’ and ‘Cymbal Rush’. Unfortunately, the other songs included are a bit too glitchy and harsh for my liking. It’s not an easy listen as Sinead says, but there’s enough here to keep Radiohead fans going for a while. Bonus points for the excellent artwork too. ‘The Eraser’ is out on 11th of July.

Cheers for the link Niall.
1It’s an odd one isn’t it? It has so many gorgeous moments and then so much of it leaves me cold.
PS You going to Luke Vibert on Friday?
2An odd one indeed.
I might not be around on Friday but if I am i’ll try and head down to it. I heard Jamie Lidell’s remix album last week, The luke Vibert remix of ‘A little bit More’ stands out as the best by far.
3remember what i said on friday night about cymbal rush, that last few mins?that would tear strips off anything on amnesiac, maybe not kid a-very powerful stuff i thought.
4Gav, it reminds me of a song off Hail to the Thief, not sure which one. I agree with you though.
5maybe a cross between we suck young blood and something else?i reckon the piano has a lot to do with that comparison.whats for dinner?
6man, you’re a legend - this is great stuff
i was only thinking about spank rock and battles the other day - next thing i look here and you have tracks from each of them plus a thom yorke interview
respect is due! one of the best darn blogs on d’internet!
must have a listen to some of the eraser - if it’s anything like ‘we suck young blood’ as gav indicated then i’m in! fu*king love that song! deranged but brilliant!
7thanks baz
much appreciated.
i think you need comments like this to ensure that people are listening / reading.
Cheers again
8[...] It’s a good week for new releases this week with new releases from Sufjan Stevens, some guy from Radiohead and Cut Chemist whose new album “The Audience’s Listening” I have been anticipating since I heard the pre-released song - ‘The Garden’ a few months ago. Well I picked up a copy and it’s been on constant rotation since. I was worried that the album wouldn’t live up to my expectations, but there was no need. His work with Ozomatli, Jurassic 5 (which he left in May 2006), with DJ Shadow on ‘Brainfreeze’, ‘Product Placement’ and last year’s DJ mix ‘The Litmus Test’ has cemented his reputation as one of the best DJs out there but on his debut solo album he has raised the bar even higher recording 100s of tracks before whittling it down to the final 12 tracks that appear on the album. The album is littered with samples from his extensive record collection and it took a year to get clearance for them all. [...]
9Niall is right. Last bit of Cymbal rush sounds just like the last bit of There There from Hail to the thief.
Love this album , just can’t stop playing it
