Liveline: Rubberbandits & Willie O’Dea (Audio)

Perhaps the most surreal thing I’ve ever heard on the radio never mind Liveline. Former Minister of Defence and Limerick TD Willie O’Dea defends the Rubberbandits’ ‘Horse Outside’ against a disgruntled caller and actually says the line “It portrays me as selling hash, and swearing on my tache that it’s good hash” from the Bandits song about him. At one point someone says “what is a bag of yokes?”. Then Blindboy Boat Club from Rubberbandits comes on the line to explain subtext in art. RADIO GOLD!

Caller: “It’s an absolute joke.”
Blindboy Rubberbandits: “Exactly, it’s an absolute joke, you put it well there yourself kid.”

    I am from Limerick and just love the Rubber Bandits & their music.

    Willie O’Dea though is a different matter. He has wrapped the Limerick flag around himself and milked the Rubber Bandits for personal publicity.

    My advice to the Rubber Bandits is to stay well away from ex minister O’Dea.

    If they are looking for obsene lyrics just read the script for “Rude Boy” By Rhianna or any new song played repetitively on the radio. There are far worst lyriics out there than the Bandits. Hope they do get the number one, for their own sake and the the sake of the Irish nations sense of humor..

They just can not facilitate discussion or conduct interviews without getting defensive and agrumentative. The condescening and sarcastic tone they speak with to people who they don’t understand, can’t relate to and are cleverer than them is just incredible.

    Really enjoy the Rubberbandits. Their parody ‘up the ra’ and their prank phone calls, for example, are bloody hilarious. But I don’t think this song is all that funny / witty. The continuous swearing is a bit tiresome / bland and in that sense I absolutely don’t think it was a suitable release at a time of year which for some of us still holds deep signifigance.
