Music you should have heard – Boom Bip

Boom Bip

From humble beginnings as a radio DJ who ran a small club night in Cincinnati, to album collaborations with rapper Doseone and acclaimed releases on Warp Records, Bryan Hollan’s musical CV has been looking more impressive as time goes on. With his 2005 release ‘Blue Eyed in the Red Room’ he continued to prove his talent with an album of largely live instrumentation and no samples. The album opener ‘Cimple’ establishes the mood with swathing guitars and piano alongside electronic beats. The synth lead ‘The Move’ is not truly representative of the rest of the album while Gruff from the Super Furries lends his distinct vocals to ‘Dos and Don’ts’ over clattering percussion which descends into a fast paced outro. My favourite song on this album is the elegant ‘Girl Toy’ which juxtaposes understated guitars and an organic sounding flute loop with more of that clattering electronic percussion. Highly recommended.
