I’m busy busy today so no time for any major enthusing (or internet memes either). I will say that State Issue 3 is out in print tomorrow (Thursday 1st May) featuring Gemma Hayes, Mick Jagger, Republic of Loose, Neon Neon, Jamie Lidell, Billy Bragg, Public Enemy, The National, Death Cab for Cutie, Daniel Lanois, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, The Vinny Club, Lykke Li, Halves, Fleet Foxes and the fascinating story of the Hope Collective. Full details here and a muxtape of all 12 featured artists can be found here.

Also, my Panda Bear / Animal Collective interview is up.

April’s podcast starts with the most bizarre medieval electro track you’ve ever heard. Seriously, you’ll be prancin’ about like the medieval minstrel from Monty Python’s The Holy Grail after two minutes. The rest of this podcast took 8 hours to prepare and then we let it marinate overnight. Presented by Aoife, it includes an exclusive tune from Jape’s new album Ritual, Scandanavian popster Lykke Li, Electronic wizard Daedelus, cinematic soundtrack music from Quiet Village, soul from Erykah Badu, an Animal Collective doppelganger from Born Ruffians, Irish electronic singer/songwriter David Turpin (whose song sounds like another famous tune, if you know what it is holler in the comments), the half-Swedish, half-Irish Kill Krinkle Club, Anticon’s Dosh, Dublin electro Merlin The Vinny Club and the far-from extinct The Dodos from San Francisco.

So after all the furore about me “disliking all music“, I recovered enough from my emotional injuries and bruised ego to make two more shows in Andrew’s Lane Theatre. Friday for M83, Saturday for Why?. In short – I missed the first 20 minutes of the M83 gig as I was at a wedding in Monaghan. We did walk into the venue when ‘Kim and Jessie’ kicked in which brought a smile to my face. The rest of the set was (apparently) a lot more upbeat than the first half and when the focus shifted from shimmering shoegaze to more electronic energy, it was all the better for it. The closer, ‘Coleurs’ was superb.

Saturday’s event was one I was relishing all week as I’m totally absorbed in Why’s new album Alopecia. It seems judging by the reaction the band received before they even picked up an instrument, Joni Wolf and co are already highly regarded. The whole show was extremely engaging, Yoni’s lyrics are some of the most unique and searing you’ll ever hear. His brother Josiah’s unusual drum setup involved playing a drumkit and a xylophone at the SAME TIME. Awesome.

In truth, I’d never heard Why? until very recently when a few people starting telling me about Alopecia but to my surprise a good percentage of the audience were devotees to their previous album Elephant Eyelash. They knew every word to those songs and were extremely enthuasiastic. There did seem to be a gap though of people who are in love with EE but have not heard Alopecia and vice versa. They each have a fantastic album to hear with fresh ears.

It was definitely a slow-burning, under the radar, triumph of a gig so if you were there, I am curious – How did you get into Why?

M83: More photos after the jump.

Tune into Phantom tomorrow morning from 10am to 12 noon to catch Edel Coffey’s last show for Phantom FM. Consistently the only morning, day-time radio show I’d tune into, Access All Areas was the best thing going on the radio at that time. It seems Edel is going back to work for in the newspaper business. Best of luck to Edel and her successor.

This tune is already going on the next podcast, but this version is soopurb!

Forget about the poor quality, she’s a star. Lykke Li owns this shizz.

Playing live tonight in Andrews Lane Theatre ( or ALT as they are calling it. See? ALTERNATIVE). So, after all my talk, I’m going.

Will the set be longer than 30 minutes?
Will they finally apologise for stealing their t-shirt artwork?
Will Una buy another t-shirt?
Will Justin make the gig?
Will the venue be finished for its grand re-opening?
Will the casseroles rival Pieminister for tasty delicacies?
Will Maximum Joy ever forgive CC?
Are they just for the hipster fraternity?
What will Thumped make of all this tomorrow? (Sample quote from a heated thread about them – “People who live in glass houses, or crystal castles if you will (with an underlying chuckle), shouldn’t throw stones“.)

I’m dumbfounded how good these mixes are. Brooklyn’s The Rub have compiled 21 volumes of hip-hop, one for each year from 1979 to 1999. It serves as an in-depth aural history of the genre. I’ve already heard about 4 tunes from 1992 I’d heard before, loved and forgotten about. The early volumes take in the birth of hip-hop with Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Spoonie G and Run DMC. Then we have early 90′s mix of gangsta rap (Ice Cube, NWA) to more conscious rap (A Tribe Called Quest, Gang-Starr) before the late nineties domination of Jay-Z, Outkast, DMX and Wu-Tang Clan. Of course, there’s plenty of forgotten gold in-between.

The Rub’s Hip-Hop Mixes

Thanks to Weareie for the tip.

There is a bookshop in Rathgar I pass occasionally. It has the opening hours marked on the door. Usually when I pass, it is a Sunday and the shop is closed. No Bernard Black hiding behind the curtain sneering at potential customers, just a simple, cute message printed on Sunday’s timetable – ‘Reading Time!’.

Similarly, Sunday is frequently ‘Listening Time’ in my house. I gather up all the demos, albums, digital files, vinyl (if I’m lucky) and spend a large part of the afternoon catching up with what I did not have time to listen to during the week. Yesterday afternoon, I picked out a slew of tunes for this April’s podcast to be recorded this week when there is time. I still have an inbox stuffed with about 120 emails I haven’t read yet.

My mate asked me once – “Do you ever get sick of listening to music?”, which I thought was interesting coming from him, being a bass player in a moderately well-known band. It knocked me back a bit though, when I quickly realised that the answer was no, I never get sick of listening to music. Ever. Unless I’m incapacitated by some crippling cryogenic mishap which hasn’t happened just yet, I’ll probably take the chance to play a few tunes on a stereo. I no longer listen to music before I go to bed but I never reach a saturation point.

I’m fascinated when I meet people who know this blog and express gratitude for turning them onto some tunes. Two and a half years this blog has been running – 730 posts and 4378 comments. On average, 3000 unique visitors a day visit the site. I often think of how people take these songs away with them, how the songs affect them, where they may listen to these songs – whether it be an iPod, a car or a house party (It’s happened – I’ve been told). Are people as obsessed about music as myself?

The Jimmy Cake

It must be a personal triumph for the nine musicians in The Jimmy Cake to have finally released their third album Spectre and Crown after such a long recording period. It certainly felt like a very personal album launch – a long overdue return. The album is an evocative, organic and rich affair with strong classical motifs and understated tones, largely abandoning the crunch of previous work. Fitting then, that the band added a string quartet and extra brass to last night’s album launch.

An apt dedication to a deceased uncle before ‘Red Tony’ lent personal weight to proceedings and was no doubt acknowledged by extended family, many who were seated in the balcony. The new songs sounded wonderfully precise – ‘Haunted Candle’ and ‘Jetta’s Palace’ were rapturous renditions. It’s hard to believe the band only practised with the string quartet for the first time a mere six hours or so before the gig. As Aoife said, Dip the bass player was a dominating presence but each member contribute equally to this band. The accordion player Jurgen and keyboardist Paul Smith were front and centre, backed by the two guitarist Vinnie and Mike. The drummer John does a fierce job keeping the band together rhythmically and the three brass band members – Lisa (clarinet), Parx (trumpet) and Alex (saxophone – his last gig for the band) are esssential to The Jimmy Cake sound.

A slew of older songs showed the transition between then and now, but were also no less than awesome, including the raucous ‘Limestone Cowboy’, ‘This Used to be the Future’ and set-closer ‘The Opposite of Addiction’. If any band deserve an accolade for achievement this year, it’s the Jimmy Cake. Godspeed.

The Jimmies were interviewed on The Indie Hour this week. Listen.
