Super Extra Bonus Party win the Choice Music Prize 2007.

I’m still in absolute shock. I woke up this morning to hear it all over the radio and see it in the papers which reminded me it actually happened. These lads are my best mates. I’m absolutely delighted for them obviously. A mate of mine and the band, Ciaran, said to me last night that he had a feeling that yesterday was a special day for all of us as friends (for numerous reasons) and bought a few bottles of champagne. None of the band thought that far ahead because it just wasn’t an issue. There was no talk of winning, just of the performance and the general buzz of a nomination. When Jim announced the winner, I freaked out (You can see it below); it all seemed so incredulous. I ended up running downstairs and jumping onstage to congratulate them like an eejit. But it was worth it.

The result is an interesting one as The Boners music is so polarising. A few people last night expressed their disappointment to me and the look of shock all around was something to behold. I personally was convinced that there was no way 12 single-minded judges could decide on an album so eclectic. Surely someone would object to hip-hop? And I was of the opinion that just because there has been unpredictability in the past, that does not make a precedent but yet again, Choice has proved its stripes.

Here’s some videos of the night (more to follow)

State

Exciting times this week (hence the slow updates around here) as State is near completion. Have a look at Phil’s preview for issue one.

State Magazine – Issue One

I stole this from LPX as I was in stitches watching this last night. It’s from a Bar Mitvah. Just watch…

gondry.jpg

I recently came across a bittorrent of the superb late-90’s music video series Mirrorball which was initially broadcast on Channel 4. If you’ve seen the Directors Label DVDs from a few years back, then you can be pretty sure they got their idea from Mirrorball which also focuses on music video promo directors such as Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Jonathan Glazer, Jonas Akerland and Mike Mills.

I watched the Gondry episode last night, which presents some of his finest work. The man is a visual genius. Examples:

Massive Attack – Protection

Shot in one-take on a set that was built horizontally, this is the ultimate music video optical illusion. Some people are hanging upside down, some are lying on their back. It’s six and a half minutes of a slow-moving beautiful headfuck.

Or Yet Another Paper Planes Remix

Pedro alerted me to this DFA remix of “Paper Planes” after my Holy Fuck remix post earlier this month. I’ve since dug up with full-length version of it which will feature on Paper Planes: Homeland Security Remixes which also includes remixes by Afrikan Boy & Rye Rye, Big Bun & Rich Boy, Scottie B and a DJ Eli remix of “Bamboo Banger”. The Holy Fuck remix doesn’t feature, neither does the recent Adrock Beasties remix though.

This is another superb reworking as you’d expect from Murphy and Goldsworthy.

The original was kinda cheesy to begin with but this video has gorgonzola on a platter for me now. It reminds me of those mid-90’s hi-NRG dance numbers that came out of the US which were totally suspect then, except updated for ‘08: hipster DJs in hipster baseball caps, Kid Sister rapping instead of an R’n'B singer giving it socks, zeitgeist-friendly neon graphics, dance-offs and a general novelty vibe. Kid Sister comes across as eminently likeable all the same.

Foals are one of those bands that only make complete sense to me in an album format. That’s because their album Antidotes is greater than the sum of its parts. Check out the Foals Interview on state.ie, what I did.

Here’s the video for the new single “Cassius”, which is about a Roman general and conspirator against Julius Caesar, sort-of.

State

It’s all quiet around here as we’re putting the finishing touches to our first issue of State Magazine. We still found time to record our first State Podcast (not to be confused with our State Mix Series) which takes the format of an informal round-table discussion. Guests Ham Sandwich join us to tell us about their Meteor win along with Tanya Sweeney, Phil Udell and our presenter JJ Worrall.

Have a listen

Myself and Eefs will be recording the next nialler9 Podcast as soon as I can find the time!
