Good Doc. Its such a shame there isn't better funding. I image its to do with the sheer number of amateur musicians
John O'Donaghue comes off like an awful knob. good tunes too, the Channel one and delorntos stuff comes across very well.

Shawn humanzi - "if a scientist wants to buy..i dunno.. test tubes..." :D

lotus lullaby chap said "a lot of money to be made from irish bands" - he's got that right. pity theyre not seeing a fuckin penny.
channel one said that for the arts council alternative indie music is "not even on the ladder" sad but ultimately very true.
The sickening Opera/Classical music stat adds credence to this fact lest it be needed.
Jim's spot on - "people going to the nch are much more likely to vote" Guess we needz ta rock daz votes! or something.... not that any of the cunts would probably ever give us a penny anyways.
Great vid - kudos lindsey and marina:)
In summation - John O Donoghue is a redneck good for nuthin' bastard.

I thought that was brilliant and I completly agree with all the points raised, the most frustrating is that art exibitions get funding but album release's dont. If I was a tourist and i was going to a city for 1 night. If I went to an amazing gig I would leave with a better view of that city. Whats the deal!!!

Wow! This is great...

I've been following the music industry in the North very closely (NIMIC seem to have been charged with doing a similar job as the Music Board and FMC combined) but it's shocking to see the kind of neglect portrayed here. Even when I lived in Belfast, going south was never an option and even bands who did (Downpatrick's Relish, who signed to EMI in Dublin) seemed to vanish altogether.

That said, there's been some exciting rumblings up North which address a lot of what was mentioned as lacking in the film - notably the Oh Yeah Center in Belfast's cathedral quarter - providing recording & rehearsal space, a music venue as well as being an artistic nexus for the city. Derry's Nerve Center performs a similar function.

I do feel, however, that these brave moves by private individuals in large part came about due to a feeling of support and encouragement from government bodies (such as NIMIC) over a number of months and years. That, coupled with strong individual leadership in the music business (individuals such as Gary Lightbody, Stuart Bailie and Tim Wheeler) gave a sense of confidence and legitimacy to the efforts of improving the status of independent music in the north.

I do hope that similar leadership, both at a governmental and private individual level, can be found in the Republic of Ireland and soon. My company and I, for our part, are committed to participating in this most important discussion and helping to find sustainable solutions.

I saw this last week and didn't post it cos it was made in late '05/early '06 and so good I thought everyone would have seen it by now.
So yet another coup for Fianna Foiled-Again, the reach of the Arts Minister extending even to the right of freedom of opinion. Pricks (I'm using that word a lot today :( )

But would you listen to Shaun Mulrooney?
"If someone wants to go to New York to record an album they should be able to do that."
Musicians should receive funding for Irish endeavours on Irish soil. THAT I agree with.

spot on! - hits the nail on the head.

it's interesting how anything critical like this can be kept out of the public eye here. may this get plenty of exposure online. i will give it a push.
