Malajube

I seem to be covering less “lads with guitars playing indie-rock” type music here of late, probably because little has been grabbing me that way. Then I listened to Malajube’s Trompe-L’oeil and it swept me off my feet. It might have been the comparison to the Super Furry Animals that got me interested at first. Bright gushing instrumentation with a distinct French twist, edifying vocals sung in French, song titles referencing cranberry juice, filo pastry and Russians. It all adds up to something rather brilliant over the course of the album.

Jim mentioned that we are late to the party and that the slow build of acclaim for the album here is possibly down to the all-French vocals but to me, this only adds to the individuality of the record, but what do I know, I listen to Ethiopian Jazz.

Best of all, Malajube play the Foggy Notions stage on Saturday at Electric Picnic next week.

Speaking of EP, We are recording our sixth podcast this weekend and because of the festival week that’s coming up, it’ll be an Electric Picnic special.
