nialler9 Podcast #14: April 08

April’s podcast starts with the most bizarre medieval electro track you’ve ever heard. Seriously, you’ll be prancin’ about like the medieval minstrel from Monty Python’s The Holy Grail after two minutes. The rest of this podcast took 8 hours to prepare and then we let it marinate overnight. Presented by Aoife, it includes an exclusive tune from Jape’s new album Ritual, Scandanavian popster Lykke Li, Electronic wizard Daedelus, cinematic soundtrack music from Quiet Village, soul from Erykah Badu, an Animal Collective doppelganger from Born Ruffians, Irish electronic singer/songwriter David Turpin (whose song sounds like another famous tune, if you know what it is holler in the comments), the half-Swedish, half-Irish Kill Krinkle Club, Anticon’s Dosh, Dublin electro Merlin The Vinny Club and the far-from extinct The Dodos from San Francisco.

These Days is on Nico’s Chelsea Girl, and the guitar on Pony Tears is a sample of it… maybe there’s something else though?

I’ve been meaning to get around to trumpeting Mr. Turpin. I will! Think he’s on ‘The View’ t’night…

OK it certainly is These Days. I hadn’t caught that. i had however noticed the resemblance to The Eels – Grace Kelly Blues. This riff is eating itself.

    yo,
Daedelus wasnt using a mixer made of lights, its a home built MIDI controller.
not overly-dissimilar to a Yamaha Tenori

    love that stuff!!

Daedelus uses a custom-built Monome, made by a friend of his in Philadelphia. It’s a sample trigger box connected to his Macbook which represents his samples as lights darting across the unit’s display.
I asked him about it after his Whelans’s gig and he said it’s so he ain’t spending the gig hunched over his laptop.Pretty inventive.

Hah! So that backing vocal that I thought sounded like Nico actually was Nico. Right.
And thanks to the Daedelus fans for clearing up the mixer rumours :)
