Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy makes the best classically arranged gay nerd indie pop songs I’ve ever heard. Listening to a Final Fantasy song makes me feel like I’ve been transported back to a time of the King’s court. Jesters, fair maidens, rogue suitors, majesty, pomp, ceremony and Pallett in the corner with his violin. The arrangement is the key here as you might expect from the guy who helped write the string arrangements for the Arcade Fire’s ‘Funeral’. The song ‘This is the dream of Win and Regine’ refers to Win Butler and Régine Chassagne from the band. The song starts with some shuffling electronics and a has a cerebral violin riff underpinned by little violin string plucks. It’s lovely.
I’ve also included an alternative version called ‘This Is The Dream Of Emma And Cam’ that was only released on a 7″ called ‘Young Canadian Mothers’ but I got on a Foggy Notions (no-bullshit internationally distributed Irish music magazine) free CD. Enjoy.
